The fish market in Ljubljana is surprisingly vivid and colorful. Many saltwater and freshwater fish are sold here, as well as lobsters, mollusks, sepia, many sorts of octopuses and shells. The fish are fresh, as most of them are from the Adriatic sea. Even if you do not plan to cook fish, is visiting the fish market a very nice experience.

Terrah, the Major of Metelkova City

Metelkova City (in Slovene: Metelkova mesto) is an autonomous social centre promoting alternative art in the centre of Ljubljana, Slovenia. It is positioned centrally, next to the railway station, on the site of former military barracks (the Slovenian headquarters of the Yugoslav National Army). Metelkova City was squatted September 1993 by Ljubljana’s Avantgarde artists.  We publih here an interview with Terrah, who has been the major of Metelkova City from it’s beginnings.

KU: Define your position at the Metelkova City.
Terrah: I am a freelance artist. I am the Major behind the scene, without a wallet.  This title was given to me after the war for Slovenian independence by Ljubljana’s skinheads. At that time they were much louder than today because of the awakened national self-consciousness. Metelkova is a city and a city needs a major. Ljubljana is the suburbs of Metelkova.

KU: Do you have a lifetime mandate, as marshal Tito?
Terrah: Well, no, I am retiring next year, as I will be retiring early due to my past work in the barracks and in the fields. After that I will be a consultant. The younger need to get a chance to prove themselves!

Birthday Present for Ljubljana’s Master Architect – Jože Plečnik

Exactly 140 years ago (January 23rd, 1872) Ljubljana‘s famous architect Jože Plečnik was born in Ljubljana. The heritage of his genious and creativity still has a strong influence on the visual and emotianal exsistance of the city of Ljubljana and other important European cities, such as Prague in Vienna.

Today another giant, a modern one – Google, has bowed to Jože Plečnik. The image on the search engine has been changed with the one above, where the Ljubljanica river, The Three Bridges and the Franciscan Church are seen. The two o-s have been replaced with Tromostovje, the Three Bridges.

Dear Jože, thank you and happy birthday, wherever you are!

Artist Justyna Koeke on Her Art and Living in Ljubljana

Justyna Koeke (1976) graduated from the Academy of Visual Art in Krakow in 2002. Between 2000 and 2005, she studied at the Art Academy in Stuttgart. She is a versatile artist mainly interested in the field of sculpturing and live performance. She works with a broad variety of materials, most often with textiles, which she uses to dress objects or monuments that she afterwards uses in performances and actions in gallery venues or public spaces. She had was a resident artist at the City of Women in 2011 and as such lived in Ljubljana for a while. Three of her performances, Mermaids, Abracadabra Fashion Show & Sodoma and Gomorrah were presented at the festival City of Women. She gave an exclusive interview for Lublana.

Budget Accommodation in Ljubljana

A good way, maybe the best, would be to get to know a Slovene, or even better, a citizen Ljublaja. Slovene people, I would dare to say, are relatively friendly and it is quite likely that before you would say goodbye you would be invited to come and visit. Besides a bed you will also get a local guide, which is priceless.

If you don’t know a Slovene yet, than you should learn how to tango. Well, this might sound a bit strange way to find a place to stay at first. but tango scene is very strong for a country so far from Argentina. There are several tango groups in Ljubljana, they all proudly nest a few excellent milongueros. So, if you can tango, just find a milonga, have fun and you will end up knowing great people who might find you a place to stay.
